Isolation a N D Characterisation of Mercury - a N D Antibiotic - Resistant Oral Bacteria

چکیده
As very little information was available on mercury sensitivity testing, the first aim was to determine the most suitable agar and concentration of mercuric chloride to use in this project. The primary objective o f the study was to determine whether mercury released from amalgam fillings could increase the prevalence o f mercury-resistant bacteria in the oral flora of children. This was achieved through cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. The second aim was to determine whether changes in mercury resistance correlated with changes in the incidence o f antibiotic resistance. The final aim was to determine whether individual mercury-resistant isolates contained the merA gene. In the cross-sectional study, saliva and plaque samples were collected from patients with and without amalgam fillings. No significant differences in the proportion o f mercury-resistant bacteria were detected between the two groups. One hundred and thirty nine mercury-resistant bacteria were isolated and 41% (with amalgam) and 33% (without amalgam) o f these were also resistant to one or more antibiotics. Resistance to tetracycline was most common. Sixteen patients were enrolled into the longitudinal study. The proportions of mercury-and antibiotic-resistant bacteria were determined on 3 separate occasions (2 pre-amalgam and 1 post-amalgam). There was not a statistically significant change in the incidence of mercuryor antibiotic-resistant bacteria during the month after the installation o f the amalgam fillings. However, a linear association between the number o f surfaces and proportion o f mercury-resistant bacteria was

متن کاملIncidence of Virulence Determinants and Antibiotic Resistance in Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated from Iranian Traditional Fermented Camel Milk (Chal)
Lactic acid bacteria, including lactobacilli, enterococci, leuconostoc and weissella species isolated from Iranian traditional fermented camel milk (Chal) were assessed for the incidence of virulence determinants (gelE, efaAfm, efaAfs, ace, espfs, cylM, cylA and cylB), sensitivity to various antibiotics and virulence phenotypes. The incidence of virulence genes was determined by polymerase cha...

Mercury released from dental "silver" fillings provokes an increase in mercury- and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in oral and intestinal floras of primates.
In a survey of 640 human subjects, a subgroup of 356 persons without recent exposure to antibiotics demonstrated that those with a high prevalence of Hg resistance in their intestinal floras were significantly more likely to also have resistance to two or more antibiotics. This observation led us to consider the possibility that mercury released from amalgam ("silver") dental restorations might...
متن کاملIsolation and phylogenic analysis of emerging new antibiotic resistant bacteria, Acinetobacter lwoffii, associated with mortality in farmed rainbow trout
Whereas it is well documented that the genus Acinetobacter is associated with antibiotic resistant bacteria and human clinical infections, there are very few studies to date that report it as an emerging new pathogen for fish. In the present study, Acinetobacter lwoffii was isolated from diseased rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from Iranian farms, in the Khuzestan Province by both biochemic...
